Spooky Season
recs for lifting the veil
I have a few spooky updates for you.
This Thursday, Oct 30, I’m reading an excerpt of a short horror story I wrote at Heavy Manners Library for Slightly Spooky Storytime. First time reading my fiction in front of an audience! Come witness, I promise you it will be horrid!
RSVP here. (by pay what you want donation to the library).
The PHENOMENA TEES ARE ON SALE!
Wait as in Phenomena? that 80s giallo film where a young Jennifer Conelly must solve crimes using her psychic connection to bugs? Yes! You mean those double sided lilac screen printed bootleg fan shirts for Dario Argento’s Phenomena I made last year on a whim? Yes the very same. 50% off, what am I crazy? While the spirits walk the earth, or until I have to fly home for the holidays. GEt yerssss.
SPOOKY RECS
I wrote a really long list and then consolidated it when I saw a witchy theme arise…
Books
Mariana Enriquez, Everyone’s favourite literary horror writer by now but if you haven’t jumped on board I urge you to now! I love all of her work, it’s not for the faint of heart! I love to tell anyone who will listen about the connection between Things We Lost in the Fire (short stories) and Our Share of Night (novel). Read OSON first! There’s a story in TWLITF that is a seed that becomes the novel - so interesting from a writerly perspective, but did take me out of the novel when I read them both in quick succession the other way around.
The Dark Dark, Stories, Samantha Hunt
We Have Always Lived in the Castle, Shirley Jackson
Tombs of Atuan, Ursula K. Le Guin- the second in the Earthsea series, the most goth, the most surreal. My favourite!
Grief is the thing with Feathers, Max Porter (currently reading! Read along w me)
Movies
Don’t Torture a Duckling, 1972, Lucio Fulci
Morvern Callar, 2002, Lynne Ramsey
VIY, 1967, Konstantin Yershov and Georgi Kropachyov
Thelma, 2017, Joachim Trier
Maija and Paija, 1990, Gunārs Piesis
The Outcasts, 1982, Robert Wynne-Simmons
Rounding up, I’d like to share with you some of the images I keep in a file on my computer ostensibly to inspire stories, but mostly I just stare at them cause writing doesn’t really work like that. Now you can stare too! ENJOIS
